Review of The Outfit

[image:632 align=left hspace=5 size=medium nolink=1]When it comes to World War II shooters, simulators dominate. Games like Call of Duty and Brothers in Arms aim (for the most part) to be realistic, cinematic, and emotional. Not that I was tired this style, but I was happy to see that someone was thinking outside of the box. Unfortunately, The Outfit doesn't quite deliver. And, while they made a good effort, I'd still take a solid game like Call of Duty 2 over this.

The Outfit is what you'd get if you took The "A" Team and sent them back in time to fight faceless foes in 1942. The result is a production that is full of over the top action and cheesy special effects. The game's tough guy attitude stomps out any hint of realism, and it seemed like I was fighting endless thugs rather than skilled German soldiers.

Much of the time, I'd use the "Destruction on Demand" feature to request more troops and equipment rather than struggle with the awkward task of firing my weapons. And I wanted to avoid piloting a tank if possible. The controls are so difficult that I'd often find myself jammed between two rocks, firing the tank's weapon desperately for my life.

The visuals in The Outfit are not up to the level of other games on the Xbox 360. Graphics with more detail and depth than those found here have been produced on the original Xbox. Considerably large fighter planes will explode into two or three pieces, plummet to the ground, and slowly fade away. Maybe I'm spoiled but since I just dropped $400 for the Xbox 360, I expect to see some massive explosions and fragments of aircraft that level anything in their path.

While I was happy to see some deviation from the standard World War II first person shooter, The Outfit didn't quite make the cut.
